Mary is a “Pumper”

When I first met with the diabetes team to learn about insulin pumps I was very apprehensive. Having managed my Type 1 diabetes for over 30 years with injections, I was unsure about trusting a device to dose my insulin for me. What if it stopped working? What if I couldn’t program it?

The girls at the hospital were very patient and took the time to answer my questions and address my concerns. I was very happy to learn that there was no surgical procedure involved with the pump! It was very easy to learn how to insert the infusion set myself. Learning how to use the insulin pump wasn’t as hard as I thought it was going to be either. And I am always the final decision maker when it comes to insulin doses.

When I started using the Insulin Pump

Wearing an insulin pump has given me such freedom compared to when I was on injections. Don’t get me wrong, my diabetes still requires my attention, I check my blood sugar at least four times per day and count my carbs, but I don’t have to be so rigid with timing.

The support I have received from the diabetes educators has been great. If they hadn’t challenged me to try something new, I wouldn’t be enjoying the freedom that the pump has given me.
