Alysha has Gestational Diabetes
I was so excited to be pregnant with my first baby! We had been trying to have a baby for over 2 years, so when we learned we were expecting I was overjoyed!
My pregnancy had been pretty normal, with the occasional bout of morning sickness and feeling tired. But when I was told that I had gestational diabetes I was surprised, overwhelmed and scared! I had heard so many stories from friends about gestational diabetes leading to tough pregnancies and big babies. I had so many questions. I received lots of support from the diabetes team.
At my first appointment with the diabetes team, they helped me understand what was happening inside my body and gave me the information I needed to put my mind at ease. They taught me how to check my blood sugar and all about healthy eating for pregnancy and to keep my blood sugars controlled.
I met with my diabetes team and the Endocrinologist every couple weeks to check in and see how my blood sugars were doing. My nurse and dietitian were always there to answer my questions. Despite working hard at my diet, at 34 weeks along I was told I would need to start insulin. I didn’t want to start on insulin, but in the end it was easier than I had thought and it was the best thing for me and my baby to keep my blood sugars controlled. Managing gestational diabetes was a lot of work, but my diabetes team was there to support me along the way! Now I get to enjoy my healthy baby!
